My buddies and I queued up at the Greek
Theatre gate very early to ensure the best seat. We were rewarded with seats
at the center back against the back concrete wall. Mind you this is an
amphitheatre with grass seats behind, so I would ventured we were within 200
ft of the stage. This gave us a back rest, center view and a view high
over the stage of the Bay. I will never forget waiting for the show to begin.
About halfway through Bolero, which was playing over the PA, the crescendo
went well above normal, indicating that WR was going to appear the moment
it was over. The scene was incredible, beautiful late afternoon, the SF
Bay bridge visible, a clear blue sky, and out come the boys.
Joe to the left with his two ARPS,
Jaco, then Erskine. Shorter was roaming as I recall. The Acoustics - my
recollection was that there were 2x 360 and 370 (the model with the horn up
top) - perhaps I'm mistaken. I was there to see Jaco despite being a WR fan
for several years before he came on the scene. In 1976 I had swapped a
fretless neck onto my precision bass and have never gone back. As a
fretless bass player myself this was as close as I was going to get to
nirvana; that was clear. I buzzed for days afterward. What a great
concert.
